Step
1
Cut sleeves off an old sweatshirt, then cut down the length of the sleeves to make a flat piece of material.
Step
2
Make the pattern by laying your hand and arm flat on a piece of a brown paper grocery bag. Spread fingers wide apart.
Step
3
Trace around your hand and fingers, leaving about 3/8 inch of extra material on all sides. (For mitten liners, just hold fingers together and trace.) Leave 3 to 4 inches above wrist for elastic.
Step
4
Fold sweatshirt material with the right sides together.
Step
5
Pin pattern to material and cut the pattern out of the sweatshirt material.
Step
6
Pin right sides of "hands" together.
Step
7
Sew "hands" together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance along all outside edges.
Step
8
Clip seams at curves, between fingers and fingertips. Clip to seam but do not cut seam.
Step
9
Turn material right side out.
Step
10
Take a piece of lightweight elastic and measure around your wrist. Add 1/2 inch and cut.
Step
11
Pull glove wrong side out.
Step
12
Turn material over 1 inch from top of glove.
Step
13
Sew a 1/4-inch seam allowance around top.
Step
14
Measure 1/2 inch from the 1/4-inch seam and sew around band, leaving a small space open to slide elastic into. Then slide elastic inside band and stitch elastic ends together.
Step
15
Hand stitch the open allowance closed.
Tips & Warnings
You can use any part of the sweatshirt to make the glove liners, not just the sleeves.
Glove liners can be worn by themselves. For example, put them on your hands and use them to dust furniture.
